Enjoy, Respect, Succeed

  1. Learning
  2. Metacognition

Metacognition  supports our learning in the way we produce and record information. It supports strategies to reflect on and evaluate our own thinking and the way in which we take on problem solving.

Questions our children think about in their lessons...

Thinking stems...

I’m thinking……

I’m wondering…….

I’m noticing…….

I’m picturing…….

It reminds me of…..

I’m figuring out…..

I just learned……..

Think about your thinking!

Metacognition

What some our children think about their learning now (September, 2022)...

"I enjoy my learning and I think it helps me to find out facts and new things I can use every day!"

"I believe my learning will help me to get better and will help me when I get to high school and get a job!"

What is metacognition?

Metacognition describes the processes involved when our pupils are planning, monitoring, evaluating and making changes to their learning behaviours. We encourage all our children to think about their learning and how they can control and monitor this process.

What are our aims as a school?

  1. To allow our pupils the opportunities in lessons to evaluate their learning regularly.
  2. To establish weekly sessions where the children can self-evaluate and reflect on the learning that has taken place.
  3. To ensure our pupils are aware of the key ingredients that are required for a 'good learner'.
  4. To ensure our pupils are aware of key strategies to support them if they find their learning tricky.
  5. To make full use of visual cues to support our pupils when they are thinking, completing and evaluating their learning.

What can you do to support your child?

  1. Be open-ended- Give your child some space to reflect on their learning- e.g. can you tell me more about why you think that?
  2. Non-blaming- It can be hard to stay open when your children are acting out, but asking them to think about their behaviour can help them learn to manage difficult situations in a better way: Why do you think you got so upset when Dad changed the channel?
  3. Be solution-focused- Encourage them to think about how they can use their understanding to change things in the future- How could you handle that differently next time?
  4. Process-oriented- Ask questions that help your child get a better idea of how their thought process works: How will you know when this drawing is finished?

The Colour Monsters (2F) have been investigating the properties of shapes. They have used metacognition strategies to solve the problem.

They had to use their prior learning of 2D shapes to help them.
