Pupil Leadership

 The Role of Pupil Leadership

The Pupil Leadership Team plays a central role in school life at Cherry Fold Community Primary School. It provides valuable opportunities for our children to develop leadership skills, represent the pupil voice, contribute to problem‑solving, and make a positive impact on the wider school community.

Being part of the Pupil Leadership Team helps pupils develop their own moral code, explore personal values and beliefs, and learn what responsible leadership looks like. It allows children to be actively involved in decisions that affect their school experience and gives them a sense of ownership over aspects of daily life.

Working within a leadership team also strengthens pupils’ communication skills, builds self‑confidence, and supports them in forming positive relationships with others. It encourages thoughtful decision‑making and increases awareness of their strengths. By collaborating with peers they may not usually work with, pupils also gain a deeper understanding of equality, diversity, and inclusion—values that underpin our whole school community.

Our Student Ambassadors Team

It is a Department for Education requirement that all schools actively promote the core British Values of Democracy, the Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, and Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs. Our Student Ambassadors Team plays an important part in embedding these values into everyday school life.

As outlined above, the Student Ambassadors Team nurtures a wide range of essential skills, including leadership, teamwork, community engagement, problem‑solving, listening, communication, positivity, creativity, emotional intelligence, and the ambition to aim high. These skills equip pupils not only for their time in school but for future life experiences.

This year’s Student Ambassadors Team was elected in September 2025 after a thorough and meaningful application process. Pupils began by completing an application form, explaining their strengths and why they would be well suited to a leadership role.

The successful candidates were celebrated in a whole‑school assembly, and their photographs were added to our Pupil Leadership display to recognise their achievement and inspire others.

Our School Council Team

At Cherry Fold our school council provides a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views taken into account in decisions that impact them.

Who We Are

At the start of each new year children in Years 3 to 6 can put themselves forward to become a member of the school council. They prepare and deliver a speech to the rest of the class who then have the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate. The elected children meet every week to present the views and suggestions of the class (including those views of KS1 and EYFS) to improve the school or raise funds for charity or school projects.

Making a Difference

We have:

  • Actively sought opportunities to contribute to school events, recently selling bands at our Christmas Fayre
  • Visited the Mayor of Burnley and discussed road safety within the area
  • Participated in a "Pick up Litter" Campaign
  • Promoted anti-bullying week through a poster campaign.

School Community Team

Roles such as Eco Club members, librarians, and allotment club participants play a valuable part in the life of a primary school. These responsibilities help children develop confidence, leadership, and independence as they take ownership of projects that positively impact their school community. Whether they are caring for the environment, promoting a love of reading, or helping to grow food and plants, pupils learn teamwork, problem‑solving, and the importance of contributing to something bigger than themselves. These roles also enrich the wider curriculum by giving children real‑life experiences that nurture responsibility, resilience, and pride in their school.

Classroom Leadership Team

At Cherry Fold Community Primary School, we believe that every child deserves the chance to develop as a leader. We know that our pupils are the leaders of the future, and providing meaningful leadership opportunities helps them grow the skills they will need to succeed. Through these experiences, children develop key attributes such as communication, prioritisation, active listening, and the ability to give and receive feedback.

Leadership roles also give pupils a powerful voice in school life, enabling them to share their views, influence decisions, and work alongside staff to help shape the continued development of our school. We actively encourage all pupils to make the most of the wide range of opportunities available to them.

To support this, we have created a variety of leadership roles across the school. Some positions are filled through a democratic election process, where pupils vote for their peers. Other roles require pupils to apply formally by completing a written application, helping them develop confidence and experience in presenting themselves for responsibility.
